What to Know About Nutrition and Diets: Paleo vs. Keto

When people hear the word ‘diet,’ they often think of drastic changes in their eating habits. However, the word ‘diet’ refers to the types of food a person eats. In other words, it’s simply the types of food that you choose to eat.

For some people, dieting can be scary and even triggering. This is because dieting has often been used to describe a restrictive way of eating, usually to lose weight. This can be a difficult process for those who have struggled with eating disorders or are trying to maintain a healthy weight.

However, it’s important to remember that dieting doesn’t have to mean restricting yourself or depriving yourself of food. There are many different ways to approach a healthy diet. You can choose to focus on eating healthy, nutrient-rich foods, or you can choose to focus on eating more balanced meals throughout the day.

In today's article, let's explore two popular diets that can be confusing at first—paleo and keto. Here's what you need to know:

What is a Paleo Diet?

The Paleo Diet has gained popularity among athletes, dieters, and health-conscious individuals, as it eliminates processed foods and focuses on foods rich in natural vitamins and minerals. This type of diet is often referred to as the “caveman diet” because it is based on the assumption that humans evolved on a diet of wild game and harvested fruits and vegetables.

Proponents of the paleo believe that it is the healthiest way to eat, as it eliminates processed foods, which are often high in unhealthy fats, sodium, and added sugars. They also believe that this type of diet is more in line with how our ancestors ate, based on what was available in their environment.

What is a Keto Diet?

A ketogenic (or “keto”) diet is a low-carb, high-fat diet that has become increasingly popular for weight loss and health benefits.

The keto diet works by drastically reducing your intake of carbs and replacing it with fat. When your body is in a state of ketosis, it produces ketones, molecules that can supply energy to the brain, heart, and muscles. This process helps reduce the amount of fat stored in the body, thus helping you lose weight.

The main focus of a keto diet is on eating foods high in fat and low in carbs. This includes foods like eggs, meat, fish, nuts, seeds, and healthy oils like olive oil.

Other foods consumed on a keto diet include low-carb vegetables such as broccoli, cauliflower, and spinach, as well as high-fat dairy products such as butter, cheese, and cream.

Which is Better?

The paleo diet is based on the idea that humans should eat as their hunter-gatherer ancestors did. This means eating whole, unprocessed foods such as fruits, vegetables, nuts, and lean meats. This diet focuses on reducing processed foods and added sugars. The goal of the Paleo Diet is to improve overall health and wellness.

The keto diet is a high-fat, low-carbohydrate diet. This diet aims to put the body into a state of ketosis when the body burns fat for energy instead of carbohydrates. This diet focuses on eating fatty meats, eggs, cheese, and low-carb vegetables.

When deciding which diet is better depends on the individual. Both diets have their advantages and disadvantages. The Paleo Diet is better for those who want to focus on eating whole, unprocessed foods, while the Keto Diet is better for those who want to focus on burning fat for energy.

The Bottom Line

Remember that dieting isn’t just about weight loss. Eating healthy should be about nourishing your body and mind and feeling good. It should be about listening to your body and responding to its needs.

Overall, dieting doesn’t have to be scary or triggering. It simply refers to the types of food that you choose to eat. It’s important to remember that eating healthy doesn’t have to mean restricting yourself or depriving yourself of food. With the right approach, you can find a diet that works for you and helps you reach your health goals.
